Drummer John Alvey has been a regular of the Nashville jazz scene and roots music scene for a decade. He can be found playing in different musical incarnations in Nashville or on the road. John has worked with Joel Frahm, Taj Mahal, Rahsaan Barber, Roland Barber, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, The Legendary Ingramettes, Rod McGaha, Alison Brown, Sherman Holmes (The Holmes Brothers), Jonathan Epley, and he has performed alongside Gregory Tardy, Jeff Coffin, Sierra Hull, Stuart Duncan, Brian Lynch, Don Aliquo, Bob McChesney, and Jason Marshall.
John has recorded with Taj Mahal, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, Shannon Labrie, as well as recording on songs with featured guest, Vince Gill. John has worked in musical fields as diverse as recording drums with string quartets, to playing shows in Nashville’s historic rooms and performance venues: The Ryman Auditorium, The Grand Ole Opry, War Memorial Auditorium, The Bluebird Cafe, The Station Inn, Rudy's Jazz Room, and The Nashville Jazz Workshop. For 20 years, John has played in a trio with his father, jazz pianist Michael Alvey, and John currently plays with the Grammy-nominated pairing of Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley. John covers a range of styles from jazz to country to post-bop and free improvisation, to combining sample-based hip hop with live instruments. In addition to his playing career, John has 15 years of teaching experience within his private studio of students both in Nashville and online. |
